Now we're teetering on the edge of The Future, like the Viking boat falling over the edge of the World. The Millennium Bug is the baptism of fire that we have to endure to make it through. I guess. We'll see about that. When I was a kid, in Scotland, I also learnt that New Year's Eve was the occasion to celebrate, while Christmas was a Germanic tradition imported by the Hapsburgs along with overhanging front teeth and leather jodhpurs. To the Scottish mindset, the New Year's tradition of going out in groups, getting totally drunk, and then visiting your neighbors as early as possible on January 1st to exchange lumps of coal, black bun, and whisky was infinitely preferable to going with aunty to sing Sassenach carols on a cold church pew. My great-uncle Angus McHooter, famous for inventing the 100% coal black bun, would have enjoyed the Millennium, the Hogsmanay to end them all. He was last seen on January 1st 1967, sometime around 4am, singing 'Scots Wa Hae' down Princes Street in Edinburgh. If you ever meet him, don't eat the dark fruit cake. Since this is the last Liberetto of 1999, I wish you a very happy December, a peaceful Hogsmanay and a very prosperous Future. It's been an interesting Millennium.
